Tel Aviv (dpa) – Hundreds of anti-war campaigners marched through central Tel Aviv late Saturday to protest against a possible strike against Iran by Israel. Up to 1,000 people attended the demonstration, police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said Sunday. “Bibi and Barak, war is not a game,” they chanted, using Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's nickname and referring to Defense Minister Ehud Barak. “Bibi don't bomb Iran,” said one poster. “Iranians, we will never bomb your country. We love you,” said others. The rally was inspired by an anti-war campaign launched last week by an Israeli couple, who posted pictures of themselves on Facebook with the same phrase. The action quickly spread and dozens of other Israelis also uploaded photos of themselves with the “we love you” phrase to the social website. Several who said they were Iranians followed suit, albeit most with their faces blurred or removed. Saturday night's protest was not planned by the couple, but organizers said it was a natural extension of their online campaign's spirit. Most of the protesters were left-wing Israelis, some of them waving red flags associated with communism. They held up slogans against Netanyahu and against the America Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), a US pro-Israel lobby that expressed strong support for Israel's right-wing premier during his recent visit to Washington.
