Copts call Salafist response to Pope's death ‘insulting'
Published in Bikya Masr on 23 - 03 - 2012

CAIRO: The Federation of Coptic Organizations in Europe, condemned and lashed out against the Salafist Members of the Egyptian parliament whom, refused to stand for a moment of silence to mark the death of Pope Shenouda III, during the first parliamentary session following his death, and described the behavior of Salafist MPs as ‘disgraceful and immoral'.
Medhat Kelada, Chairman of the Federation Coptic organizations in Europe said that the behavior of the Salafist deputies, whom are supposed to represent the people of Egypt with all its sects in the People`s Assembly, is seen as “intellectual sterility mixed with severe hatred toward anyone who is different from them,” adding that it could be also considered as a “defamation of religions and insult to religious figures.”
He pointed out that this behavior by the ultra-conservative Salafist MPs, proves that “this parliament does not represent all Egyptians, and that it is a sectarian parliamnt, therefore the powers and legitimacy of this parliament shall fall.”
He also condemned the ‘shameful' remarks of Salafist religious leaders such as Barhamme and Bakkar and Wagdy Ghoneim and the masses of the Salafis and their attempts “to undermine the stature of a holy figure,” and said that such attempts to insult the late Pope are “devoted to the Taliban-style state, they wish to establish.”
