MANILA: Philippine authorities on Wednesday urged Filipinos not to travel to Syria and reiterated a call for those already there to return, after the death of one migrant worker. Meran Prieia Montezor, 23, was killed by armed gangs on February 24 in Homs, one of the areas where rebels have clashed with government forces, as she was driving with her employer's family, the Department of Foreign Affairs said. The maid was the third Filipino reported killed in Syria since the conflict erupted last year. “Please don't accept job offers in Syria,” said Vice President Jejomar Binay, who also warned Filipinos against illegal traffickers. The Department of Foreign Affairs said it was also doing its “utmost to reach all Filipinos in Syria to inform them of the measures implemented by the Philippine government and to get them out of harm's way.” The government ordered mandatory repatriation for an estimated 10,000 Filipinos living and working in Syria in December. But so far, only 1,120 have joined the government-organized evacuations. BM ShortURL: http://goo.gl/EnCVu Tags: Philippines, Syria, Workers Section: Business, East Asia, Latest News, Syria
