Sofia (dpa) – US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton on Sunday criticized Russia and China over their decision to block a UN resolution condemning the violence in Syria. “Thirteen out of 15 Security Council members voted for the resolution. Among them were also Arab and Latin American nations,” she pointed out in Sofia after meeting Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borisov. Clinton said that United States will press for further sanctions against Syrian President Bashar al Assad's regime, warning that continued repression could “escalate into a brutal civil war.” Borisov and Bulgarian Foreign Minister Nikolay Mladenov chimed in their own condemnations of Assad's regime and the veto in the UN. “Bulgaria strongly condemns the horrific violence in Syria,” Borisov said, while Mladenov warned that “history will not forgive those supporting a dictatorship.” Clinton flew in from Germany, where she had attended an international security conference. She praised Bulgaria's transition from a Communist regime to a democratic country and highlighted “our strong partnership.” Bulgaria joined NATO in 2004 and has been a strong supporter the US policies in the Middle East and Afghanistan. The two countries jointly run military bases in Bulgaria since 2006. BM ShortURL: http://goo.gl/mhedo Tags: China, Clinton, Russia, UN, Veto Section: Latest News, North America, Syria
