Abuja (dpa) – A bomb exploded at a church near the Nigerian capital on Sunday morning, killing and injuring people, emergency service officials said. The blast went off at the St Theresa Catholic Church in Madalla, near Abuja, during a Christmas service. Officials were unable to say how many people were killed. The National Emergency Management Agency said it lacked sufficient medical equipment, particularly ambulances, to handle the causalities. Security is high in Nigeria, after dozens of people were killed in the past three days in the north-east, in clashes between government security forces and the Islamist group Boko Haram. More than 50 members of the armed group are believed to have been killed since Thursday. Spokesmen purportedly speaking for the shadowy sect claimed a number of explosions in the same area this week. Many residents have fled the unrest. Last Christmas, dozens of people were killed in attacks that targeted holiday celebrations in central Nigeria and the north.
