Uruguay remain unbeaten in World Cup Qualifying after annihilating Chile 4-0. Liverpool striker Luis Suarez was the main force of destruction by scoring all four of the goals. Uruguay now sit in first place with seven points and Chile are second to bottom with three points. It is still early in the qualifying but these teams seem to be heading in completely opposite directions. Coming off of their 2011 Copa America victory and 2010 World Cup semifinal appearance the small nation of Uruguay have packed a tremendous punch in the past year. They have carried that fine form into qualifying and on Friday Chile saw first hand how dominant they have become. Luis Suarez dumped in four goals to bury El Rojo and move Uruguay farther ahead of the pack. With goals in the 41st, 45th, 67th, and 73rd minutes Chile did not stand a chance. The first goal came from a clean strike just inside the post that keeper Claudio Bravo could not reach. Suarez got a shot off unchallenged and showed what was to come from the home side. In the 45th a breakdown in defense saw Chile scrambling to defend their goal. A free kick launched into the area was not cleared well and Bravo could not hold onto the ball. It bounced out to the edge of the box and was almost redirected back in by an Uruguayan player but a header on the line averted the threat. The header did not get far enough and Suarez came back to head it into goal. A foul could have been called as it appeared he collided with a defender in the air but the goal was awarded and Uruguay were up 2-0. Suarez got the hat trick after 67 minutes from a beautiful cross by Martin Caceres. His header left Bravo grasping at air. Chile were completely unorganized and were scrambling in defense the whole night trying to stop the constant Uruguayan onslaught. The fourth goal, which seemed inevitable at this point in the match, came from a half volley in the box which Suarez blasted into the back of the net. When the visitors were not busy battling off Suarez and co. they could not muster much of an attack of their own. The result surely left Chile searching for answers and in need to get a positive result from their next match against Paraguay. Uruguay face Italy in a friendly on Monday. The top four CONMEBOL teams qualify automatically and the fifth place team will play against a team from the Asian Football Confederation.
