Salma El-Wardany, an Egyptian journalist who was arrested in Khartoum last week while covering anti-government protests, will be deported on Tuesday. Wardany's sister, Lina El-Wardany, wrote on her Twitter account that Salma was told by the Sudanese security official that she can stay in the country but without covering the protests. She said Wardany was harshley treated by security on Tuesday. El-Wardany, a 26-year-old reporter with Bloomberg news agency who also writes for Egyptian news website Ahram Online, was detained outside Khartoum University together with Sudanese activist and blogger Maha El-Senosy. This month, protests have spread across the capital Khartoum and other cities, expanding beyond the core of student activists who hoped to turn public discontent into an "Arab Spring" movement that could topple President Omar al-Bashir who has been in power since 1991.
