Cairo - The Islamic Research Centre launched an initiative entitled 'Human Respect' on Tuesday, in the framework of the efforts exerted by Egypt's Al-Azhar, to correct false ideas promoted by extremist groups. The initiative aims at explaining the correct understanding of Islam and its view of the human being (Man), regardless of different theologies and ideas. The centre's Director, General Mohie Al Din Afifi, said that the initiative aims to underline the position of Man as a great creature, saying that the initiative supports the values of religious, intellectual and doctrinal freedom. He stressed that no people should be forced to embrace any specific religion or doctrine. The initiative is not the first of its kind, as Azhar presented a number of initiatives aiming to promote the proper image of Islam. It has created a number of websites, including an observatory to monitor extremists' fatwas to refute them if needed. It has also established an observatory of Islamophobia to discuss ways to confront this phenomenon in western countries. He called for not using dire economic, social or educational conditions as an excuse to impose specific beliefs on people He added that the initiative underlines Islam's respect of Man, away from the groups working to manipulate the minds and hearts of youth to achieve gains at the expense of religion.
