An Italian citizen was on board an EgyptAir flight from Alexandria to Cairo that was hijacked to Larnaca airport in Cyprus this morning, the Italian foreign ministry said Tuesday. EgyptAir said all those on board Flight MS181 apart from the crew and four foreign passengers were released from the plane, which it said was hijacked by a "passenger wearing an explosives belt". Egyptian news agency MENA named the hijacker as Egyptian national Ibrahim Samaha, seated in row 38K. He has requested political asylum in Cyprus, Egyptian state TV reported local sources as saying.
