The American poet Sam Hamill on Monday shared on FB an interview al-Bawaba News had Saturday with the Egyptian prominent poet Ahmed al-Shahawy. Hamill, co-founder of Copper Canyon Press and founder of Poets Against War Movement, has highly commended al-Shahawy's poetic production. Well-known for his political poetry, Hamill declined in 2003 an invitation by Lora Bush to attend a poetry seminar in the White House in objection against the then U.S. imminent war over Iraq. In an interview, he adopted the view of the ancient Greek poet, Sappho on warmongering as "childish behavior". Shahawy, laureate of the UNESCO Prize Poetry in 1995 and the Kafafy Prize in 1998, said Hamill had given non-stop support for Arabs and minorities across the world. the 55-year old al-Shahawy, whose poems have been translated into numerous languages, is due to participate in October in the 'Americas Poetry Festival 2015' in New York.
