Former Egyptian presidential candidate, Ahmed Shafiq resigned late Saturday from the leadership of the Egyptian Patriotic Movement party, media outlets reported. Shafiq said he cannot lead the party to achieve its objectives and reach new ranks, highlighting the difficult circumstances that led to his resignation. Shafiq has lost in the 2012 Egyptian presidential elections to ousted president Mohamed Morsi, the member of Muslim Brotherhood terrorist organization. He won 48.27% of the votes, compared to Morsi's 51.73%. Shafiq left the country on 26 June, 2012 for Saudi Arabia to perform the Umrah religious pilgrimage, eventually relocating to the United Arab Emirates, where he has since been, citing "security reasons" as his impetus to remain. In September 2012, Morsi's government issued an arrest warrant against Shafiq, who was later acquitted of all charges. However, his name is still on the airport's watch lists pending investigation in other corruption-related cases.
