A conscript was shot injured Friday in the head in the North Sinai city of Sheikh Zuwaid, east of the capital city of Cairo, Egyptian security sources told Al Bawaba News. "The 22-year old conscript was shot in the head while being on a routine service at the Karam Al Qawadees checkpoint," the sources added. The victim, whose name has not been revealed yet, was likely shot by a sniper from a distance, according to the sources. He was carried to the Al Arish Military Hospital for treatment. The restive Sinai Peninsula has been home to a string of deadly terrorist attacks targeting police and military personnel since the former president Mohamed Morsi was ousted July 2013. The Islamic State (IS) linked Wilayat Sinai terrorist group has repeatedly claimed responsibilities for the attacks. In Sep. 2014, the Karam Al Qawadees checkpoint was under a deadly attack killing 30 security personnel and wounding 32, prompting the Superme Military Council to adopt a new anti-terror strategy including constructing a buffer zone on eastern borders with the Gaza strip.
