EGYPT not only hosted the African Weightlifting Seniors Championships but dominated the stage with an impressive medals haul in almost all weight categories, men and women. The Egyptians claimed an overall 60 medals; 32 gold, 18 silver and nine bronze medals. Olympic bronze medalists and gold world champion Mohamed Ihab and Sara Samir both claimed three gold medals each in their weight divisions and in the process set three new African records in each event: snatch, jerk and total. Ihab's three medals came in the -81kg weight category, while Samir claimed her three golds in -76kg. Salma Farag, 17, also clinched three silver medals in the -81kg women's weight category, while Rania Ezzat took three gold medals in -71kg. In the men's -89kg Ahmed Ashour collected three gold medals and set a new African record in the snatch. In the -96kg category, young prodigy Mohamed Selim claimed two gold medals in the snatch and total, setting a new African record in the snatch. In the same category, Selim's teammate Ragab Abdel-Hay garnered the clean and jerk gold medal. In addition, 16-year-old Fatma Ahmed won three bronze medals in the -76kg weight category..Heba Saleh -49kg, ahmed saad 67kg, Samar Hussein 78kg, have each claimed three gold medals in their weight categories.
