The annual group exhibition of miniatures, the "Small Art Works", currently on display atDuroub gallery is showcasing around 200 small art works in painting, sculpture, ceramic, 3D Egyptian dolls, glassware, silver jewelry among other art modes. It features more than sixty artists to mention but a few Hassan Al-Sharq, Nagwa El-Ashri, Shaker Al-Maadawi, Mervat Refaat, Nagwa Mahdi, Effat Hosni, Sara Abdel-Azim, Mohamed Al-Tarrawi and Mohamed Mandour. Each artist has a handful of works on display; so the walls of this modest gallery are overwhelmingly packed. Many of the small, framed canvasses feature the people, landscapes and traditions of Egypt. The paintings range from impressionist cityscapes to cubist portraits, as well as some abstract pieces and a number of beautiful Arabic calligraphy works. As a tradition followed every year by the gallery, it honours this year artist Nadia Hassan, a pioneer in making the unique 3D dimensional dolls that represent most of Egypt's governorates with their characteristic costumes, colours and fabrics. A Faculty of Fine Arts, Helwan University graduate at the décor department, Hassan's graduation project was about creating 23 dolls representing 23 different countries depicting their costumes, styles and most distinctive colours. After graduation, she participated in a number of puppet theatre shows designing the puppets and the décor as well. Aside from the vibrant collection of paintings, the exhibition also features miniature metal sculptures and hand-painted ceramic discs and tiles. Holiday shoppers should be sure to check out this jewelry selection for unique gift ideas. The "Small Art Works" miniatures exhibition offers distinguished artworks in different materials that are quite reasonably priced making the work of these local artists quite accessible to the public compared to works sold at other galleries. The exhibition is on until 3 January.
