Details on fuel rationing smart card in Egypt to be revealed Egyptian government will introduce details on smart card system that rations subsidised fuel consumption starting in July or August
Egypt's government will introduce on Saturday a smart card system to reduce the subsidies on fuel. In July or August the smart card is supposed to take effect, the government announced in May, to ration subsidised fuel per car. Once the card owner depletes their subsidised fuel allotment they must pay market prices. The system aims to reduce Egypt's energy subsidy bill. This year the subsidies are expected to cost the country LE120 billion, but with the implementation of the smart card is expected to reduce to some LE100 billion in 2013/14. The government has already implemented phase I: building a database for distribution companies and depots, according to official announcements. Originally, the smart card system was supposed to enter into effect in April but was postponed. http://english.ahram.org.eg/News/74645.aspx
