Defending champions Ahly cruised to a comfortable 4-0 win over Ittihad of Alexandria at Cairo Stadium on Monday as Rene Weiler's men extend their perfect league start. A goal by Ahmed El-Sheikh just before the break and three second-half goals by Mohamed "Afsha" Magdi, Walid Azaro and Ali Maaloul in quick succession were scored as Rene Weiler's side showed no signs of slowing down. Ahly are now clear on top after collecting 24 points from eight games, two ahead of Arab Contractors who played two more games. They have scored an impressive tally of 23 goals, conceding only once. The Red Devils had a slow start in the game with their hosts making their presence felt. Ittihad of Alexandria, who were second of the table before this game, showed a strong performance in defence to contain all of Ahly's attempts, but they also gave the hosts a few scares. Ivorian striker Razak Cisse forced keeper Mohamed El-Shennawy to make a save to deny his close range header, Nour El Sayed's free kick missed closely the target while Emmanuel Okwi's header from point blank went over the bar. Ahly struggled to impose their usual passing game falling to open any lapses in Ittihad's defence. However, they managed to get on top in injury time when a corner was glanced on for an unmarked El-Sheikh to tap home at the far post. It was a totally different affair after the interval. The hosts doubled the lead in the 54th minute after a brilliant combination with Hussein El-Shahat feeding Junior Ajayi in the area whose precise pass put Afsha in front of an empty net. Second-half substitute Azaro made it 3-0 from his first touch of the game after volleying in a chip ball from Mohamed Hani in the 56th minute. Tunisian left back Maaloul completed the rout from the penalty spot in the 73rd minute after defender Mohamed Rezk was adjudged to have handled the ball in the box. Ahly will now turn on to the continental stage as they will face Platinum Stars in the African Champions League on Saturday.
