9.4 million licensed vehicles in Egypt: CAPMAS

Egypt's Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS) announced on Wednesday that the number of vehicles licensed in Egypt through the end of 2016 reached 9.4 million, state news agency MENA reported.
According to the report issued by CAPMAS, there were 3.2 million licensed vehicles (34.5 percent) in three major governorates, 3.1 million (32.9 percent) in Lower Egypt governorates and 2.8 million (30 percent) in Upper Egypt governorates.
There were also 247,000 licensed vehicles registered (2.6 percent) in Egypt's border regions.
Cairo Governorate ranked highest with 2.3 million licensed vehicles (25.1 percent) followed by Giza Governorate with 1.1 million (11.7 percent).
Alexandria governorate comes in third with 623,000 licensed vehicles (6.7 percent).
South Sinai governorate registered the fewest number of vehicles nationwide with 28,000 (0.30 percent).
The report said the number of cars totalled 4.7 million, or 50.6 percent of the total number of licensed vehicles by the end of December 2016.
The majority of those cars were private cars, totalling 4.3 million (90.9 percent of all licensed cars).
Taxi cabs followed private cars at 373 thousand nationwide (7.9 percent of cars).
Private buses accounted for the majority of licensed buses with 50,000 buses (35 percent of buses) whereas school buses ranked last with 13 thousand buses (9.1 percent).
The CAPMAS report also revealed that the number of licensed of trailer trucks reached 93,000 in Egypt by the end of 2016.
