Arab banking sector sees 'remarkable development': bank official Banks are shrugging off regional unrest to make strong gains, claims the general secretary of the Union of Arab Banks
The Arab world's banking sector is continuing to perform well, recording strong growth despite unrest across the region,says Wissam Fattouh, general secretary of the Union of Arab Banks. Fattouh said that Arab banking has overall achieved 'remarkable growth', adding that thevolume of assets in the sector for the first quarter of 2011 year totalled $6.2 trillion. He reported deposits of $5.1 trillion, loans of $2.1 trillion and $300 billion in capital volume. Fattouh said quarter-on-quarter growth was 5.2 per cent,compared with a climb of 14.5 per cent during the entirity of 2010.
