Egypt supports Lagarde for IMF head: Agencies Egypt's foreign minister has announced his country's backing of France's IMF hopeful, according to news agencies
French Finance Minister ChristineLagarde has won Egypt's support in her quest for leadership of the IMF. "The Egyptian government supports the candidacy of French Finance Minister Christine Lagarde for the post of managing director of the IMF," Egypt's foreign minister, Nabil El-Arabi, was quoted as saying by news agencies. Following a visit to Cairo on Sunday as part of a worldwide tour to build support for her candidacy, Lagarde praised a "very affirmative" Egyptian response to her IMF leadership bid. Egypt is on the 24-member executive board which is due to reach a consensus on naming the new IMF head at the end of June. The United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Indonesia have recently joined the herd of Lagarde supporters, according to several news reports. Lagarde competes with two other candidates for the IMF top job:Stanley Fischer, Bank of Israel Governor and Mexico's central bank chief Agustin Carstens. Along with the backing of the whole European Union, Lagarde is campaigning to gain the support of emerging economies and secure easy passage to the top post.
